Mike McLeod addresses Swain County High School students on the character trait Repect

We were honored to welcome back one of our own to Swain County High School today! A proud alumnus, retired NC State Highway Patrol trooper, and current Tennessee Valley Authority Officer, Mike McLeod, visited our students to deliver a powerful, engaging, and highly relevant presentation on a core character trait: Respect.

Instead of a standard lecture on following the rules, Mr. McLeod broke respect down into three critical pillars for navigating today’s world:

Respect for Institutions & Society With trust in major institutions at historic lows, it is easy to fall into a polarized "Us vs. Them" mentality. He challenged students to recognize social media manipulation, avoid partisan echo chambers, and remember that a fair, functioning society relies on cooperation and a shared trust in our systems.

Respect for Others No group has a monopoly on the truth. To bridge the divide from contempt to civil discourse, he encouraged students to listen first, find common ground over shared interests (like sports or music), and view people as unique individuals rather than political or social labels.

Respect for Yourself The bedrock of mental well-being and healthy relationships. Knowing your self-worth builds the resilience needed to handle life's setbacks and failures. He urged students to stop people-pleasing, walk away from situations that compromise their integrity, fuel their bodies well, and embrace the fact that asking for help—including therapy—is a profound strength.

He closed with a powerful reminder that overcoming our nation's polarization is a team effort, and this current generation is incredibly capable of leading the way. E Pluribus Unum—out of many, one.

Thank you, Mike, for returning home to share such an inspiring and vital message with our students!
