Swain County Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Brandon Sutton as the district’s new Superintendent. Dr. Sutton brings a wealth of experience in educational leadership and instructional excellence, along with a deep commitment to the students and families of Swain County.

Dr. Sutton has dedicated the majority of his career to serving the Swain County community. Most recently, he served as the Western Regional Director for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). In this role, he coordinated regional events and facilitated state support efforts for Western North Carolina school districts, focusing on data-driven strategies and equitable educational outcomes.

His extensive background within Swain County Schools includes serving as the Director of Student Services, Principal of Swain Middle School, Assistant Principal of Swain County High School, and a K-8 Exceptional Children’s teacher.

While serving as principal of Swain Middle School, Dr. Sutton was named the 2019 Western Region Wells Fargo Principal of the Year. He has also been recognized as the Swain County Schools Principal of the Year on two occasions.

Dr. Sutton earned his Ed.D. in Educational Leadership from Western Carolina University, where he also obtained a Post-Master’s Certificate in Public School Leadership, as well as his Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Education. His experience also includes supervising elementary education interns for Western Carolina University.

“I am incredibly honored and grateful for the opportunity to serve as Superintendent of Swain County Schools,” said Dr. Sutton. “This community helped shape who I am, and these schools played a vital role in my life. To be able to serve the students, educators, and families of this county is deeply humbling.

Over the coming months, I look forward to listening, learning, and working alongside our teachers, staff, and community. Together, we will continue building a system of excellence that prepares our students for both graduation and life.”

Dr. Sutton will officially begin his new role on April 30. Please join us in welcoming him back to Swain County Schools.
