Swain County Schools participates in the USDA’s National School Lunch Program, Breakfast Program and After School Supper Program as well as the Summer Food Service Program.  The Nutrition Program employees work diligently to serve nutritious, great tasting meals and snacks to students and staff, all while keeping prices affordable and striving to provide excellent customer service.   Eating healthy, well balanced meals is so important to a child’s overall health and ability to perform well in school. Our program successfully meets all federal guidelines on nutrition for the meals and snacks we serve.  We highly encourage all students to eat school meals.

  • Each student is offered the following for breakfast: 1 oz. of grain and 1 oz. of protein or 2 oz. of grain, 4 oz. of 100% fruit juice and fruit (we offer fresh fruit most days of the week), and 8 oz. of low-fat or fat-free milk. Students must choose 3 of these items, one of which must be a fruit or vegetable, to be counted as a meal.  Students may choose all 4 items offered plus extra fruit/veggies if they are still hungry.
  • Each student is offered  the following at lunch: a minimum of 1-2 oz. of protein daily, minimum of 1 oz. of grain daily with, 1-2 servings  fruits, 1-2 servings vegetables and 8 oz. of low fat or fat-free milk. Students must choose 3 items and one of those must be a fruit or vegetable to be counted as a meal.  Students may choose all 5 items offered plus extra fruit/veggies if they are still hungry.

Free and reduced price meal applications are now available to be completed online at  Paper applications are also available at your child’s school or you may print off the application from this website. Only one applications is required per family. You DO NOT need to fill one out for each child.  An application may be filled out anytime during the school year. You will be mailed notification when the application is approved or denied.

*Families with students at West Elementary only, do not need to fill out a free and reduced meal application.
