Swain County Schools wants to keep our stakeholders informed of our efforts in response to COVID-19. We are very concerned for the safety and well-being of all students and staff. The Swain County Board of Education will have an Emergency Meeting on Friday, March 13, 2020 at 5:30pm in the Swain County Administration Building, 50 Main Street Bryson City, NC, 2nd Floor room 223. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss decision‐making guidelines in regards to the COVID‐19 Coronavirus.

Friday, March 13th was originally scheduled as a Teacher workday but it is now a regular Student Day.

There will be a Special Joint Board Meeting with the Swain County Board of Education and the Cherokee School Board, Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at 5:30 p.m. at Swain County High School, 1415 Fontana Rd, Bryson City, NC 28713.

The Swain County Board of Education will meet Monday, March 9th, 2020 at 6PM in the Swain County Administrative Building, 50 Main Street, 3rd floor, Bryson City, NC 28713

Board of Education Meeting, February 10 at 6PM

Update: Swain County High School was evacuated today due to a fire alarm. Dust from grinding at the new construction initiated the alarm. As students and staff exited the building, dust from the grinding lingered in the air causing the full evacuation. Swain County Fire Department cleared the building and determined there was no fire. All students and staff are safe and have returned to school.

Forecasts are calling for more saturating rainfall over the next week, with significant amounts falling on Monday and Tuesday.  Swain County Schools’ Administration is in contact with Swain County Emergency Services as well as the Department of Transportation, and in concert with them, are continually monitoring the situation.  Please keep in mind that changes in our weather can occur quickly and many times with no warning. 

We ask that you keep these circumstances in mind as we move forward this week.  Our continuing pledge to our community is to always act with the utmost safety of our students and staff in mind.  As situations arise and change, Swain County Schools may have to dismiss and send students and staff home on a faster timeline than normal, which in turn could mean shorter notification times for our community.  We ask for your understanding and patience as we move forward this week.

The Swain County Board of Education will meet Monday, January 6th, 2020 at 6PM in the Swain County Administrative Building, 50 Main Street, 3rd floor, Bryson City, NC 28713. There will also be a public hearing for the revised board policy 4060, Native American Policy and Procedures for 2020-2021 prior to the meeting starting at 5:45PM.
