Induction 2008

For decades “Doc Kelly” was a tireless patron and proud fan of any and all Swain High athletic teams· An accomplished photographer and videographer, he took endless numbers of photos and video of various athletic teams· He was one of a group of men in the community who made a regular practice of providing after-practice transportation home for athletes· On a regular basis after a championship game he would open the soda fountain at the drug store he owned and allow team members to eat all the ice cream and drink all the sodas they wanted· Hundreds of Swain High athletes cherish special memories of the drug store he owned and the praise he constantly provided for each person as they walked through his doors· Doc Kelly became known as the “Apostle of the Smokies” and a nearby mountain bears his name.  He was likewise an apostle of Swain High athletics, a wise man who, while always recognizing the pre-eminence of academic accomplishment, understood that athletic achievement had its place in the life of the community
