Welcome to Swain County Schools 21st Century Community Learning Centers After School Program Site!

Our after school pages are under construction…as we transition to 21CCLC!

Our 2017-2018 after school program will operate in a traditional manner until our federal funds are released to operate the program (and we have been told to anticipate sometime in October 2017.) At that point, we anticipate that our new 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC) grant resources will begin and allow us to provide additional services to our students and families.

Stay tuned as we announce the many different services (such as community bus transportation for after school, a bag dinner for participating students, occasional field trips, and enhanced academic support, tutoring services, and more) that will become available.

We are also looking for parents who are interested in serving on our Parent Advisory Council for after school and summer programs. Please contact Regina Ash at rash@swainmail.org if you would like to volunteer.

2017-2018 Welcome Letter from our school personnel:

Dear Parent:

Welcome to Swain County Schools After School Program. Thank you for taking the time to read and complete our forms. We are looking forward to providing a quality program for your child. Our program’s focus is on a variety of activities with academic support as its foundation. Our goal is to provide quality programming that meets the needs of the child, supports the parents and works together with the students and teachers to improve academic success as well as create a positive environment for your child.

After school will operate Monday-Friday beginning August 28, 2017, from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm for the elementary schools, and the same hours, but beginning just after Labor Day holiday for middle school. After school will operate when school is in regular session. There will be no after school offered on teacher workdays, holidays, early dismissal days, or snow days. A school calendar for 2017-2018 shows teacher workdays, holidays, etc., and will be updated as possible after inclement weather or snow days to reflect adjustments needed. (Please stay tuned to this site for info regarding high school after school.)

Please note: there will be changes in our fee structure when our 21st Century Community Learning Center (21CCLC) grant takes effect. Until transitioning to the new federally funded program (in at least August, September, and now it appears October,) the fees for after school will remain the same at: elementary-$35.00 a week per child; middle school-$25.00 per week per child. After 21CCLC begins, there will be no charges for after school services during the 2017-18 school year; however, there are limited numbers of spaces available, and students must attend full-time in order to maintain their space. (Full-time is minimally averaging 3 days per week.) (Remember: we are anticipating a wait list for after school this year, and in order for your child to maintain her/his space in the program, attendance in after school of a minimum of 3 days per week is required.)

After school is closed on teacher workdays, holidays, and inclement weather days. Please see other parts of this site for additional information.

If you have been eligible for a state subsidy in the past, please keep in mind that when 21CCLC takes effect in October, this program should be more beneficial for you.

Please complete all attached forms and return to school. Forms must be signed and returned before your child will be considered for the After School Program. Due to limited staff and budget, enrollment is limited. Students initially selected for the elementary After School Programs will be notified by Thursday, August 24th, with middle school soon after. Swain High School after school will not begin until federal funding begins.

We are looking forward to a very exciting year. Please feel free to contact the After School Assistant at your school if you have any questions.
